John F. Kennedy International Airport, located in southern Queens is the busiest airport in the country in terms of international travelers. Queens is the home of the New York Mets baseball team, the U.S. Open tennis tournament, and Aqueduct Racetrack. In prohibition days, bootleggers and gangs ran rampant in the Bronx. Irish, Italian and Polish immigrants smuggled in most of the illegal whiskey. In recent years, the Bronx has become an important center of African-American culture. Hip hop first emerged in the South Bronx in the early 1970s. Upper Manhattan takes in the neighborhoods of Marble Hill, Inwood, Washington Heights, Harlem, and parts of the Upper West Side. Upper Manhattan could be described as the "non-tourist" section of Manhattan. The Upper West Side is a primarily residential neighborhood.

Today, Downtown Brooklyn is the third-largest central business district in New York City. Neighborhoods such as Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brownsville, East New York, and several parts of Bushwick in North Central and North East Brooklyn have some of if not the highest crime rates in New York City. Brooklyn is home to one of the most vibrant Jewish communities outside of Israel. There are more Italian-Americans on Staten Island percentage wise than any other county in the United States. The hiphop-collective Wu-Tang Clan formed in the Park Hill section of Staten Island and often refer to the island as "Shaolin". Several members still reside on the island. The most famous landmark in lower Manhattan is now the former World Trade Center site. Lower Manhattan is home to some of New York City's most spectacular skyscrapers, including the Woolworth Building, 40 Wall Street (also known as the Trump Building), the Standard Oil Building at 26 Broadway, and the American International Building.

Jersey City is the second largest city in the state of New Jersey located in Hudson County on the peninsula between the Hackensack and Hudson rivers. Its commercial and industrial center surpassed only by Newark, it is a port of entry and a manufacturing center. With 11 miles of waterfront and significant rail connections, Jersey City is an important transportation terminal point and distribution center.

Rikers Island is the name of New York City’s largest jail facility as well as the name of the 413.17-acre island on which it sits, in the East River between Queens and the mainland Bronx. The facility generally holds about 15,000 inmates at a time. The daytime population (including staff) can be 20,000 or more. The facility, which consists of ten jails, holds local offenders who are awaiting trial and cannot afford or cannot obtain bail, those serving sentences of one year or less, and those temporarily placed there pending transfer to another facility which does not have space. The only access to the facility is from over the unmarked 4,200-foot three-lane. An inmate at Riker's Island is informally called a Riker.
